This Mainer was in town visiting his Mother for the weekend. Currently a student at Yale University, he’s got the Ivy League style down flat. Navy pea coat? Check. Backpack? Check. Ray Ban’s? Check. Ryan Gosling-esque coif? Double check. It might be time I tour college campuses again.
This shot/my poor photographic skills don’t do this guy justice. I’ve seen him around Portland before and have been bracing for the opportunity to get a shot of him. He’s always sporting orange aviators, bike gloves and laceless oxfords. It’s quite a feat to be able to wear those three pieces so regularly that they’re just a natural part of his personal style.
One would think we were in the middle of an arctic freeze here in Maine, but alas, this New Yorker was bundled up on a balmy 50 degree evening. To be fair, she is a North Carolina native and came right off a boat, but at least her time in the North East has resulted in an approach to creative layering.
Her silky print pants from Urban Outfitters and knit cocoon wrap were a super chic surprise under all that fleece.
We spotted this MECA sophomore and Bangor junior in front of Monument Square’s soon-to-be-decorated tree. She’s a Chicago native that will have no trouble handling the cold days ahead. Her look was a quirky combination of tough-meets-girlie: a floral tunic with a ribbon around her waist, worn with pleather leggings and a motorcycle jacket. This New England boy is wearing two winter wardrobe essentials: a peacoat and a pair of festive red pants. (Imagine the possibilities at holiday parties.) And of course, every fashionable couple needs sexy shades like red aviators and retro Ray-Ban’s.
Smell that? It’s the sweet scent of a new-to-Maine fashionista. We love newbies! This Seattle native moved to Portland in May and currently works at uber hip Addo Novo on Congress Street. Just look at these proportions at work! A flouncy pleated skirt with button details contrasts nicely with her pink smocked camisole. There’s lots of frilly, feminine details too - a tonal floral pattern on the top and a delicate gold charm necklace. In lieu of the gladiators we see all the time, her bold cheetah flats were a sample sale score from Opening Ceremony. Me-ow.
The heat is on in Maine. Nate and I have found ourselves perched on benches, hoping fashion comes to us rather than sweat our way through the streets in search of it. There is no single item that can waft through summer better than a linen kaftan. Sadly, we don’t see enough of these in Maine. This MECA art history student purchased hers for less than $40 at Made in Maine in Belfast several years ago. This particular print is not for the fashion meek. Instead, she dons it with pride (“I think the fabric was supposed to be for a couch”) and even adds an added dose of color with hot pink aviators. Sorry, Demis Roussos, she wears it better than you.
