Spotted on Commercial Street: Fair isle sweater and a neck tattoo.
Only a real man can pull off a chunky knit cable sweater with anchors on it. We stopped to chat with Adam, co-owner of Moody Lord’s, while he was soaking up some sun and sharing a slice outside the shop. More urban than urbane, his fitted cap and oversized plaid shirt were an unexpected compliment to the preppy grandfather sweater. Where did he score such a sweet piece? Moody Lord’s of course.
Behind every good personal style blog is usually a patient photographer boyfriend, husband or roommate. It’s true - these men (or women) are often behind the camera but are sometimes as stylish as the blog’s daily centerfold. Such is the case with Terry, the photographer (and sometimes star) behind Sweet William. Like every good Maine man, his closet was filled with plaid shirts, a collection of underwear and socks, a few ties in case of an emergency and a bevy of cardigans for layering options. And as only a Portland man can do, he was able to give us a tour without ever putting down his Pabst.

Headed to a Bard Coffee holiday party (recognize your barista?) on coordinating bikes, this duo didn’t let the cold keep them from a mid-afternoon cruise. She was sensibly dressed in a black parka and a knee-length skirt. (Take note, ladies: Miniskirts are never appropriate cycling attire.) We loved his camel toggle coat and bright red pop-top mittens. His dapper newsboy cap was a stylish alternative to the blaze orange knit we often spot on the streets.
We spotted this dapper gentleman in “his favorite spot” in Portland, on the bench outside his apartment in Monument Square. There is something special - and dare we say rare - about someone dressed up to people watch.
We appreciated this polished ensemble - a linen shirt, chinos and leather shoes. By pairing it with a suede blazer, his summery threads transition into the cool days ahead. But his best accessory? An awesome moustache.

This bartender works at Run of the Mill in Saco, where he enjoys the live local music scene, especially The Toughcats because their drummer “plays like Animal from the Muppets. I’m a drummer too so I can appreciate it.” He lives in Sanford, but still finds himself in Portland every night. His outfit was color coordinated with his tat - the orange v-neck and blue converses brought out the colors in his arm art. It’s all in the details too, with perfectly cuffed pants (they’re very “in” now), a banded straw hat and geeky sunglasses.

Every time I walk down the street people ask me about it. People have actually pulled over while they’ve been driving just to ask where I bought it. I’m not telling a soul.
Caught reading a philosophy book outside Portland Museum of Art, every single element of this man’s style was tried, true and lived-in. I wouldn’t be surprised if each article he was wearing was a decade old.
His black tank had one strap hanging on by a thread, clearly a favorite shirt. His worn in corduroys and newsboy cap appeared to be thrifted. The best accessory was his black Original Book Pack from L.L.Bean - a true Maine staple.
