I spotted this MECA student with Ashley a couple weeks ago, who graciously stopped for a photo while schlepping a box back into school. Not only did I love his style (hello pattern mixing and peach cords!) but he told us that he was a jewelry designer. So look out for him on First Friday where he’ll most likely be selling his goods.
And I’ll see you on the streets tonight…!
Who doesn’t love handmade dresses from aspiring designers? Seated next to our retro red gal was this young designer. A junior at MECA, this New Hampshire native was selling her summery frocks at First Friday. We loved the simple silhouettes and button details at the front. Make sure you find her next month and if you can’t wait that long, shoot us an email and we’ll give you her info.
The heat is on in Maine. Nate and I have found ourselves perched on benches, hoping fashion comes to us rather than sweat our way through the streets in search of it. There is no single item that can waft through summer better than a linen kaftan. Sadly, we don’t see enough of these in Maine. This MECA art history student purchased hers for less than $40 at Made in Maine in Belfast several years ago. This particular print is not for the fashion meek. Instead, she dons it with pride (“I think the fabric was supposed to be for a couch”) and even adds an added dose of color with hot pink aviators. Sorry, Demis Roussos, she wears it better than you.
Eyeglasses are undoubtedly my favorite part of the new geek chic phenomenon. I’ve had a soft spot for tortoise-rimmed spectacles since Annie Hall and I thought they looked totally adorable on this UMaine art history student. Her eclectic style hails from Los Angeles and Korea where she grew up. A delicate, sequined blouse, tulip skirt and ornate accessories were dressy enough for a night on the town, while her chambray shirt and navajo-inspired bag relaxed the look. No girl about town is finished getting dressed without something sparkly. Her glitz came in the form of a cluster of rings and a fabulous Forever 21 feathered necklace.
A very cute pair of USM students, from Kennebunk and Pittsfield respectively. We love the modern take on an argyle sweater, with the pattern splashed across the hoodie. His friend embodied the early 90’s look to us (in a good way): long locks, layers of necklaces and a sleeveless hoodie. And how kitsch is that crochet?
We love your bag. Did you make it?
I found it in an abandoned house actually. I broke a window, climbed in and found a lot of cool trinkets.
This gorgeous gal was walking back to MECA, artist portfolio in hand, where she’s enrolled in the pre-college program. She’s a great example of how to wear a form-fitting mini dress. If you’re able to pull off a bandage skirt (first made popular by Herve Leger) pairing it with a looser top is an easy way to keep the look casual. Her slouchy teal shoulder bag is a hip alternative for carrying her drawing, 2D, 3D and art history books.
How do you like living in Portland?
Well, I’ve been here for a month but tomorrow is my last day. I’ve loved it and I love Maine. It’s a lot less humid than where I’m from in Northern Virginia.
We spotted and immediately hearted this senior at MECA (a photography major, so no pressure to get a good shot or anything). She understands the importance of lightweight layering.
Her cerulean tunic paired with a flowy skirt atop leggings was the perfect summer wardrobe, keeping her comfy in case the temperature dips. We especially loved that buttery leather saddlebag, a fabulously versatile piece that will continue to look good way past her college years.
Also of note: her bold red accessories- feather earrings from H&M and a chunky beaded bracelet.
